If a church is to be built, Jesus Christ must be its only architect and builder (Mt 16:18). If a church is to be built, Jesus Christ must be its exclusive foundation (Eph 2:20; 1 Cor 3:10). If a church is to be dynamic, Jesus Christ must be present by His Spirit (1 Cor 3:16). Therefore, we are committed as a church to do the central thing that helps to ensure that these things are realities at Grace Immanuel-proclaim Him (Col 1:27-28).
We aim to be God centered in all our church life and ministry. However, being God centered and caring for people are not mutually exclusive. No one was ever more God centered than our Lord Jesus. Yet, never was there a person with more love and compassion for people (Mt 9:35-38). Therefore, we desire to reach out to people in a host of ways. Our greatest aim is to minister to them at the point of their deepest and most pressing need-the salvation of their never dying souls. However, also like our Lord, we want to show love and compassion to people by meeting their temporal and physical needs.
Preaching ought to be at the center of a church, but a church is not to be a preaching center. In other words, Grace Immanuel is not just a building where like-minded Christians show up on Sundays to hear a message, and shake hands with the preacher on their way out the door. Though we recognize the unique role and function of official spiritual leadership in the church, we do not want Grace Immanuel to be a “one man show”. We aim at being a church that is marked by an every member ministry (Eph 4:7-16).
